The Jana School for Severely Intellectual Handicapped children was founded in Kleinmond during May 1997. Two resident couples each with a severely handicapped daughter, were experiencing endless difficulties in their attempts to find specialised attention for the two girls. Their only solution was to start a school where the children could be taught to do things for themselves and become as independent as possible.
At present, there are seven children: four Xhosa, two Coloured and one White. They receive tuition from a fully qualified teacher with the help of an assistant.
The sad news is that Government does not subsidise schools with less than 16 pupils. The onus thus rests on staff, parents and the public to raise funds in order to keep the school operating.
What we therefore would like to achieve is to have a sustainable support program where companies can adopt the school as a social responsibility project. And on this note, we want to thank each person and company already helping, for their support and co-operation.
